Handwritten on photograph, lower right: Asahel Curtis. 28849. On photograph label, 1858 is crossed out and replaced with 1894. The meaning of the 1894 date is unclear. Presumably this print is a copy made by Asahel Curtis of the original photograph; however, it is unlikely that this duplicate was made in 1894, because Asahel Curtis began apprenticing in the studio of his brother, Edward Curtis, in 1894 or 1895, and did not open his own Seattle studio until 1911.
