Transcribed from front of photograph : "Seattle . Portraits . Seattle , Chief of the Suquamish and allied tribes , 1786?-1866. " Transcribed from back of photograph : "The original from which this photograph was made , was taken in 1866 by Richard Sam[m]is a few months before Chief Seattle's death , at the instigation of C.B . Bagley . About 1907 it was enlarged and retouched by James A. Wehn (a drape and a grecian urn were eliminated from the background and a cane removed from the Chief's hands. " Handwritten on recto : "E.M . Sammis acc . to article in Seattle Sun , March 1 , 1978. "
