Description
Preparations for opening ceremonies of the Century 21 Exposition (Seattle World's Fair) . "Seattle shattered into a galaxy of wild excitement yesterday as the World's Fair made its thundering debut…Water-skiers zipped around the oval course in the stadium . The daring aerialists of the Circus Berlin cavorted on a slender cable stretched between the Stadium and the Space Needle , 300 feet above the crowd . Cheering thousands began swarming over the fair. " (Stanton H . Patty , Seattle Times , April 22 , 1962 , p . C.) Memorial Stadium was built in 1948 in memory of former Seattle high-school students killed in World War II . Owned by the Seattle School District , it was leased to the Century 21 Exposition for the Seattle World’s Fair . The Fair’s opening ceremonies and many large events were held there.
