The CAPTAIN WHIDBEY INN, built in 1907
of Madrona logs, is one of a virtually extinct breed
of hostelry — an old family inn where warm
hospitality, comfortable lodging, good food and drink
are the primary considerations.
The CAPTAIN WHIDBEY INN's remote location at the
turn of the century made it an ideal retreat for people desiring
an escape from the metropolitan life. It was simply a matter
of boarding the steamer in Seattle and debarking at the Inn's
pier after a comfortable trip up the Sound. For those wanting
a greater taste of the out-of-doors, the tent area behind
the Inn provided just the right balance between indoors and
outdoors, as meals were served at the Inn.
The interior is much the same as it was originally with antiques and curios
scattered around the living room — the main feature of which is the
massive beach stone fireplace. In the dining room the windows have been
enlarged to afford a fine view across the cove with a magnificent vista
of Mount Baker in the distance.
Behind the dining room is the picturesque Chart Room
recalling salty spots you have visited in the far corners of the
globe. Here you will find exotica ranging from Aquavit to
Zinfandel, as well as mementos of people and places hither
and yon. Aloft are the comfortable lodgings, all of which
overlook Penn Cove, where you can go to sleep to the dulcet
sounds of waves lapping the shore. Should the appointments
here at the Inn be too rustic for the less adventuresome,
there are cottages adjoining the Inn which are modern and
feature wood burning fireplaces.
