LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE TO BE FEATURED
AT SEATTLE WORLD'S FAIR
Designed to incorporate the most advanced techniques in storage and
retrieval in a book environment, Library 21, the Library of the Future, is
built around two circular information centers. Visitors enter the library
through a descending ramp and move ahead through two circular exhibit
areas. The entire display is suspended over :i ■'ellecling pool which lends an
air of solace representative of a library climate. The roof structure is split
truss beams and features lighting rings for perfect illumination. Opaque
panels overhead can be adjusted according to exterior lighting conditions.
Housed in the 11-story Coliseum Building, the Library of the Future
covers a 9,000 square foot exhibit area. Paul Thiry, the Fair's prime architect
and architect for the Washington State Library building, designed the Coliseum so that there is not an obstructing pillar. The architectural firm of
Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall, under contract to the American
Library Association, formulated the Library 21 structure, and Vance Johnson
was in charge of the visual eoncemuali^ation and design.
