Housing A-Plenty
Gandy Moves to Spike Wide-Spread
Rumors of Sell-Out; Says 2,000,001
Room Nights Are Still Available
In a move to stem a growing tide of rumors that Seattle
is "sold out" for the World's Fair duration, Joseph Gandy,
Fair President, has issued a lengthy statement to combat
the impression and to direct attention to the Fair's cognizance of the importance of Expo-Lodging.
For Seattle World's lair
Gandy's statement, issued in
New York, presents a detailed
picture of housing conditions
now existing in the Seattle
area. He points, out Expo Lodging is now a full division of the
Fair and that in spite of a tremendous volume of requests,
the organization is now in a position to confirm every request
within 10 days and that shortly
the period will be chopped to
seven.
Mr. Gandy's statement is
printed in full below:
The housing situation for Seattle World's Fair is excellent.
This is because all segments
of the lodging industry, as well
as the citizens of Seattle, have
cooperated to insure that every
one of the millions of visitors
will have a good place to stay.
I would strongly suggest
that there is one thing you
should do if you don't have
a reservation now. Write
Expo-Lodging Service, Seattle, Washington. I repeat,
write Expo-Lodging Service.
This is our official housing
agency—so let us know when
you are coming.
I also hasten to add that for
awhile we had two problems
that caused misunderstanding:
Some months ago Expo-Lodging was snowed under by the
volume of reservation requests.
,We had a hard time keeping up
with these requests. We are
doubling our personnel and
Expo-Lodging is now a division
of the Fair. Now we are in a
position to confirm every reservation request within 10 days.
Soon we will chop the period to
seven days.
The other problem has been
the rumor that we are out of
space. The rumor is wrong—
and I wish-to invite any person who does not succeed in
landing a confirmed reservation from Expo-Lodging within a reasonable time, to write
to me personally, Joseph Gandy, President, Seattle World's
Fair.
The inaccurate rumor about
space seems to stem from people who have written directly
to better-known hotels in Seattle, for reservations on specific
dates, and been turned down. If
you are one of these people,
please write to Expo-Lodging.
Expo-Lodging has the following facilities listed, within 30
miles of the heart of Seattle:
1. Ten thousand hotel and
motel rooms, with more being
listed every day.
2. Twenty-five hundred apartments that are changing to motel-type operations for the period of the fair. These will give
complete motel service. They
are of equal quality with medium and first-class hotels and
motels.
3. About 4,500 rooms in private homes. All such facilities
listed by Expo-Lodging will
have been inspected and approved by the Seattle Real Estate Board. Prices will range
from four to ten dollars.
Other Gandy Facts on Housing
A. With about 18,000 rooms
listed with Expo-Lodging in
Greater Seattle, the total of
room-nights for the 184 days
of the fair is well over three
million. (Reservations for 120,-
000 room-nights have been written.)
B. The average number
persons for each room wiH
two and a half—giving Ex]
Lodging facilities for 45,00*
visitors per night.
C. Expo-Lodging also lists
trailer homes, trailer camps and
private camp sites close to Seattle. For instance, a beautiful
village of trailer homes with ac-
commodationse for 2,400 a day
is opening 15 miles from Seattle, with every possible service
from baby sitting to shuttle
busses.
D. Expo-Lodging will reserve
space for youth groups in dormitories.
Coming and Going—Much as
it would help us if you write to
Expo-Lodging now, we hope you
will come even if you forget to
write. At all gateway cities to
Washington you will find official Expo-Lodging centers. Major Oregon and British Columbia cities will also have these
centers. Without charge, these
centers will make reservations
for you at Seattle or in most
cities of Washington, Oregon
and British Columbia.
